1. What better way to start than with  ITIL’s Official Website. Here they provide a great background base to understanding what is ITIL, the publications and the qualifications available to all delegates. Here you know that what you read and what you find will be accurate, up-to-date and full of top quality information.

2.Wikipedia’s ITIL page provides a more informative discription of this IT best practise, along with the history to ITIL and overviews to ITIL V2 and ITIL V3. Wikipedia is a little out of date with the focus being on versions 2 and 3 of the suite and fails to mention the ITIL 2011 Updates which will be released 29th July, but an informative website nonetheless.

3. ITIL Central offers information and support, at both corporate and personal levels. It provides a focal point for news and interaction, adopting an open and inclusive philosophy.

4. The ITIL Community Forum is a portal for ITIL professionals and acts as an interactive and independent resource to support ITIL education and for professionals to exchange ITIL information for free. This website is free of charge to join and currently has a membership of over 53,000.

5. ITIL News (much like ITIL Community Forum) provides a portal for individuals and organisations seeking knowledge, sharing knowledge, offering services or looking for resources relating to ITIL and ISO/IEC 20000. They strive to provide honest opinions of what happens in the industry and encourage debates.

6. Suprisingly, I have found Linkedin to be a great resource. There are many groups that allow you to voice your opinions, ask peers questions and network with professionals. ITIL v2 / v3 Service Management (ITSM) and ISO 20000 + Subgroups, ITIL Service Level Managers and ITSM (ITIL) Professionals are some of the best groups I’ve found and am members of.

7. And last, but by no means least, we here at IT Governance (a shameless plug I know!) provide a vast range of knowledge on the subject of ITIL and other IT best practices that are reconised throughout the world. We have recently released our ITIL white paper, which is now available to download for free. This whitepaper contains information on the background to ITIL, the suite, certifications, IT Service Management and ISO 20000, and is a great starter guide.
